Extradition treaty; air link with Indonesia |

India and Indonesia have signed eleven agreements including an extradition treaty and
air services agreement, the latter paving the way of starting of direct flights between
the two countries. The agreements were signed during the State visit of President of
Indonesia, Dr. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to India from 24-26 January. Dr. Yudhoyono was
the chief guest at India's Republic Day parade on 26 January. The signing of extradition treaty marks a new beginning in the relations between the two countries removing all hurdles to closer cooperation. The Indonesian President and the Indian Prime Minister unequivocally condemned terrorism in all its forms and stressed that there could be no justification whatsoever for any act of terrorism. They resolved to improve sharing of intelligence, development of more effective counter terrorism policies, enhance liaison between law enforcement agencies, provide assistance in the areas of border and immigration. The two leaders stressed the importance of strengthening bilateral defence cooperation, through regular exchanges between the defence establishments of both countries. It was agreed to increase tourism between the two countries in a big way to strengthen vibrant and longstanding people to people ties. As a step towards this objective, the Indian Prime Minister announced granting visa–on-arrival to Indonesian citizens. Indonesia already provides this facility to Indian nationals traveling to that country. Indonesia had been expecting India to reciprocate for along time. In order to strengthen consular cooperation and traditional friendly relations between India and Indonesia, the establishment of a Consulate General of India in the Province of Bali has been announced. The Indonesian President and Indian Prime Minister decided to mark the year 2011 as the celebration of six decades of diplomatic relations between the two countries and to hold related events to mark the anniversary in the two capitals. |
